Udayan Bose

Udayan Bose was a pioneering investment banker and a foundational figure in shaping India’s modern financial services industry over a remarkable career spanning nearly five decades. Known for his vision and integrity, he played a transformative role in introducing investment banking, venture capital and private mutual funds to India helping to modernise the country’s capital markets.

Bose began his career at Grindlays Bank, where he rose to become Regional Director for Asia-Pacific. He then joined European Asian Bank (later Deutsche Bank), eventually serving as Director of Asia operations. He was instrumental in Deutsche Bank’s entry into India during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In a landmark move, he founded CreditCapital, which partnered with Lazard to set up India’s first international investment bank, laying the groundwork for modern investment banking in the country. He went on to establish one of India’s earliest venture capital funds and launched the nation’s second private mutual fund.

As Founder & Chairman of Lazard India and later Global Partner & Group Managing Director at Lazard London for Asia, Bose advised Fortune 500 companies, sovereign governments and global institutions on landmark transactions. He played a key advisory role in India’s 1991 economic liberalisation, helping open the economy to global markets.

Beyond India, he served as a Senior Advisor to HRH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai and held board positions at companies such as Thomas Cook India, HMV, Reliance Capital and JK Paper.

Udayan Bose’s legacy extended far beyond deals and boardrooms.
